The main project of Krasnoyask Museum Biennale.

Often, art is positioned inside a universal and fairly pretentious context: genius, eternity, greatness, tradition… In any case, we constantly use this word when talking about the sublime: "the great art traditions", "classic art", "traditional art", and so on. But worldwide tendencies of the last few decades offer a completely different approach — one that is more democratic, liberated and straightforward, that allows us to perceive the artist’s creation here and now, in connection with reality in which it was created and space inside which it was born.

It may be especially important for artists that create their work in full solidarity with their local spaces, situations, events and characters. The artist’s point of view is determined by his talent, temper and experience, and if he comes from a different place, carrying with him a foreign "territorial code", this creates an additional element of intrigue. In such a case the artist takes on a role of a "mediator" between a foreign territory or a person — a "carrier of information" - and a viewer by broadcasting the emotional experiences and impulses that he himself received from this land.

The "Open Boundaries" project is designed to be not just another exhibition with a set of artworks. Every piece presented by artists will be inspired by Krasnoyarsk and Krasnoyarsk Region, local museums and art community, architecture and the space of the former museum of Lenin, the unique history of this territory and the special Siberian character of the people — or, perhaps, by something that we cannot predict. It is important for us to see the finished works carry the "spirit of the land", to see that the essence of the place shines through the artistic prism.

To summarize, artists will communicate with the following elements of the local context:

  1. Identity symbols (i.e. something that exists only in Krasnoyarsk)
  2. Loci and toponyms
  3. Regional and municipal events
  4. Faces and characters (local people from all walks of life)
  5. Municipal (regional) communities and institutions (mostly museums)

This way, local identity will become a basis for the creation of the artwork.
