Metropolis
2009, Installation (household garbage, light-accumulating paint, sound, timer turning the light on and off)

"Metropolis" is the most well-known work of the artist. Different versions of the installation have been demonstrated in Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Saint Petersburg and other cities. To see the work you need to use two light modes.

When the light is on, you see a pile of rubbish (bottles, boxes, packaging from household items) filling the room. The light starts to go out gradually: you start to see glowing light-accumulating paint on the surface of the rubbish. The room is completely dark, your vision has adapted: the pile of rubbish has turned into a recognisable map of the city -- roads, bridges, rivers, squares, famous buildings, lights on in the houses. The lights come back on -- you see the pile of rubbish again.

The name "Metropolis" refers to Fritz Lang’s film, to the modernist dreams and fears, connected with a city. A city built on ruins and rubbish, a city that each of the inhabitants creates from their waste, a city with a dark side.
